Carpet | Everything we considered from colour, door bars + material

If you read my blog post about how mixing up our flooring saved us money, you know we didn't initially want carpet in our house. Like all decisions in our renovation, this one took some time to come around to. Typically I'm not the biggest fan of carpet because it isn't as easy to keep clean as wood floors or tiles. There is something very cozy about waking up in the morning and putting your feet down on soft carpet.

We decided to have tiles and wood flooring in higher traffic areas, and carpet in the bedrooms, playroom and office. This balance felt best as it's also allowing us to add more texture into the house which we have been all about! After shopping around we decided to go for a Berber style carpet in 100% Wool. I fell in love with Berber carpets after my trip to Morocco. Wool carpet felt a bit more luxurious underfoot and is so soft as well. We settled on the Auckland Berber from Carpetright.

It took sometime to settle on colour for the carpet. To keep things simple we went for the same style of carpet in all the rooms we are carpeting. We got some samples and looked at them in each room, considering the wall colours and lighting in each space. In the end we decided to go with Grey (top right sample) in the playroom and office (both rooms are downstairs). Upstairs we went for a more calm + airy colour - Stone (bottom left sample). The darker colour for downstairs felt more forgiving and it seemed logical to use one colour carpet for downstairs and one upstairs if they weren't going to be the same.

The next thing that we needed to decide on was how we were going to transition from carpet from one room to the next. This was a bit of a cultural lesson for me as in America we don't use door bars. If you were to use the same carpet throughout bedrooms and a hallway upstairs as we plan to, you would seam the pieces of carpet together. I'll save you going down the rabbit hole I did and watch this YouTube video if you're interested :)

I don't love door bars because they break up the space, especially when I was hoping to have the carpet really just flow from one room to another upstairs. Standard door bars have exposed screws which I worried would cheapen the look of the wool carpet. Carpet Right had some better looking options that don't have screws exposed and are a bit more sleek and modern. We decided to go with the pewter colour for the carpet upstairs as it blends into the carpet a little bit better. Downstairs we are going to have black and white Florence style tiles. The border of the tiles will be black so a black door bar will blend right into the tile flooring in the hallway.

Seeing that we have a bit of a deadline coming up with another baby only a few weeks away, using door bars also allows us to carpet only the rooms that are ready which simplifies a lot of things for us. Tomorrow we're already having someone from Carpet Right out to take final measurements and then we will be one step closer to a fully decorated room! We will update again later with photos and a full review, stay tuned!
